Introducing Matt Buchan: Our Senior Winemaker & Winery Operations Manager
We are super excited to introduce Matt Buchan, our Senior Winemaker & Winery Operations Manager!
Matt started with us in November last year following an impressive 20-year career in the wine industry, where he worked in the Napa Valley, Central Otago and Mosel Valley before moving to Margaret River in 2012. Matt has now spent over a decade creating award-winning wines from WA and we are stoked to have him as part of our team at Deep Woods Estate.
As well as completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) through Charles Sturt University Matt is also a regular wine show judge both locally and interstate.
We asked Matt what some of his favourite things to do are (outside of wine, of course!) and he said: "Any free time is generally spent at the beach surfing with my family and friends or rolling around at the local skate parks trying to avoid injuries."
His desert island wine? "Chardonnay! I live and breathe Margaret River Chardonnay however a favourite/inspirational wine that I have had the opportunity to taste in recent years is the Paul Pillot La Romanee. A fine example of consistently great White Burgundy." Yum.
Speaking to Matt on his new role, he said: “For many years I have held Deep Woods in high regard. Both the wines and winery culture are a benchmark for producers Australia wide and I am excited to be given the opportunity to join Julian and the team. I’m looking forward to not only contributing my own creative and technical eye to the brand but also coming to understand the pristine fruit sources that build the portfolio.”
Welcome to the team Matt! 2024 vintage is off to an epic start, and we look forward to having you as part of the team for many more.
