2021 Reserve Chardonnay Crowned Best New World Chardonnay at the GFWC 2022
We are incredibly excited to announce that our 2021 Reserve Chardonnay has won two Trophies at the prestigious Global Fine Wine Challenge (GFWC) today. The Trophies were awarded for Best Chardonnay and White Wine of Show.
Described by show judges as "beautifully concentrated" and "fabulously complex" this is a wine of immense quality, and we are very proud to showcase the Margaret River wine region on an international stage.
Known as ‘The Most Exclusive Wine Show in the World’, the GFWC has been running for nearly 25 years and is an invitation only event, with only the top 120 wines from each New World country – Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA – competing. For a wine to be selected to take part in this Challenge is an achievement in itself and for our 2021 Reserve Chardonnay to be crowned Best Chardonnay and White Wine of Show is a triumph that is not lost on us.
Speaking on the exceptional win today, Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy said: "Standing tall on a world stage is a pretty special achievement and the team at Deep Woods Estate is absolutely thrilled. It’s a great acknowledgement of the exceptional quality of the Chardonnay’s from Margaret River and the tireless hard work that all of the Deep Woods Estate team puts in."
With a growing tally of four Trophies and six Gold Medals, the 2021 Reserve Chardonnay was also recently named as James Suckling's Top Australian Wine and No. 25 in the World for 2022.
Our 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was recently awarded ‘Best in Show’ at the world’s most recognised wine show, the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022. This was the only Australian Cabernet Sauvignon and one of just two Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world to be recognised as Best in Show.
These international results have launched the Reserve Range to the top of the international wine stage, firmly planting Deep Woods Estate alongside some of the world's best and most iconic wines.
A huge congratulations to Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy, Chief Viticulturist John Fogarty, Senior Winemaker Andrew Bretherton, Operations Winemaker Emma Gillespie and all of the winery and vineyard team members on producing one of the best Chardonnay wines in the world!

James Suckling, Top 100 Wines of the World 2022
A tight and full-bodied white with flint, stone, sliced apples and pears. Really mineral undertone. Seashells, too. It’s so tight and focused with lots of structure. Long and intense. Powerful gunpowder and spice and sea salt. This is impressive to drink now like a top young Burgundy (Chevalier-Montrachet) but will deliver so much more in the future. 98 Points
Ray Jordan WA Wine Guide 2023
This is one of the finest Deep Woods chardonnay releases. It comes from two key Wilyabrup vineyards with additional fruit from further south at Karridale and Wallcliffe. Has such a vital and high energy mouthfeel with a crunchy juicy texture. Citrus tang with minerally acid accentuates these engaging characteristics. Different parcels were aged separately for nine months on lees and then brought together for the magic to happen. 97 Points
Huon Hooke, The Real Review 2022
Smoky matchstick reduction adds extra layers of character to a very complex bouquet. It's funky in the nicest possible way. Sensational intensity of flavour; lively and fresh, a wine of power and precision. Indeed, a great chardonnay! 97 Points
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
Fabulous intensity of flavour, building as it goes until the finish is where it's at its peak. Guava, peach, grapefruit and something like kaffir lime, with smoky/cedarwood oak and matchstick notes purring over the top. There's a directness to this wine, almost a sharpness - thanks to its lime-like aspect - but at the same time it's both textural and flavoursome. This is quite stunning even now but it's best drinking days are head of it. 95 Points
Tasted yesterday and the National Wine Show invitation day. Superb, dense with oak evident. For me a perfect Chardonnay.
